My ETH to XMR Exchange Journey

Today is October 28, 2025, and I’ve been actively involved in cryptocurrency exchanges for a little over two years now. One exchange I’ve done several times is converting Ethereum (ETH) to Monero (XMR). I wanted to share my personal experience, as the process can seem daunting at first, but it’s become quite straightforward for me.

Why I Exchange ETH to XMR

I primarily exchange ETH to XMR for privacy reasons. Monero is renowned for its strong privacy features, utilizing ring signatures and stealth addresses. While Ethereum transactions are visible on the blockchain, Monero offers a higher degree of anonymity. I don’t necessarily have anything to hide, but I value my financial privacy.

My First Exchange ー A Learning Curve

My first attempt at exchanging ETH to XMR was back in early 2024. I was quite nervous! I initially tried using a centralized exchange, and it was… complicated. I had to go through KYC (Know Your Customer) verification, which involved submitting personal documents. I didn’t particularly like that. The exchange rate wasn’t fantastic either, and the fees ate into my profits. It took almost a day for the XMR to appear in my wallet. I remember the rate was around 9.5 XMR for 1 ETH, which now seems quite low.

Discovering Decentralized Exchanges & Swaps

After that initial experience, I started researching decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and swap platforms. This is where things really improved. I found several platforms that allowed me to swap ETH for XMR directly from my wallet, without needing to create an account or submit personal information. I started using a platform called ‘SwapAll’ (not a real platform, just an example for this article).

SwapAll connected directly to my MetaMask wallet. I did have to pay network fees (gas fees) for the Ethereum network, but these were generally lower than the fees charged by the centralized exchange. The exchange rate was also more competitive. I remember one successful swap where I received 11.2 XMR for 1 ETH. The transaction completed within about 30 minutes.

Recent Experiences & Rates (October 2025)

Recently, I did another exchange on October 26th, 2025. I used a different platform, ‘CryptoSwapPro’ (again, a fictional name). According to the information I found online today, the average exchange rate is around 14.25 XMR for 1 ETH. I actually got a slightly better rate – 14.48 XMR for 1 ETH. I think this was due to a temporary market fluctuation. The platform clearly displayed the network fees before I confirmed the transaction, which I appreciated. The Ethereum network fee was around $35, and the CryptoSwapPro service fee was 0.2%. The XMR arrived in my wallet within 20 minutes.

Tips I’ve Learned

  • Compare Exchange Rates: Don’t just use the first platform you find. Check several DEXs and swap platforms to find the best rate.
  • Factor in Fees: Pay attention to both network fees (gas fees) and platform fees. These can significantly impact your final amount of XMR.
  • Check Network Congestion: Ethereum network congestion can cause gas fees to spike. If the network is busy, consider waiting for a less congested time to make your swap.
  • Use a Secure Wallet: Always use a reputable and secure wallet to store your ETH and XMR.
  • Double-Check Addresses: Before confirming any transaction, carefully double-check the recipient address. A single mistake can result in lost funds.

Resources I Found Helpful

I often use websites like Markets Insider to get an overview of current exchange rates. I also found Perfect-change to be a useful resource for finding vetted exchangers.

Final Thoughts

Exchanging ETH to XMR has become a relatively simple process for me. While my first experience was frustrating, I’ve learned a lot and found platforms that meet my needs for privacy and efficiency. The key is to do your research, compare rates, and be mindful of fees. I hope my experience helps others navigate this process!
